Confidence, respect and a love of learning

Spelling

Intent

At Bonner, we continually strengthen our writing provision so every child becomes a fluent, confident writer. Our intent in adopting Read Write Inc. (RWI) Spelling is to:

  • Build on the strong foundations of the RWI Phonics programme in Reception and Year 1.

  • Teach accurate spelling systematically so children can focus on composing high-quality writing.

  • Ensure a clear, consistent approach across Years 2–6, with age-appropriate challenge and support.

  • Close gaps swiftly and boost confidence, especially with tricky and common exception words.

Spelling - Ruth Miskin Literacy

Implementation

  • Who: All children in Years 2–6 take part in RWI Spelling.

  • When: Weekly lessons delivered by class teachers using the RWI Spelling sequence and routines.

  • How:

    • Short, fast-paced activities that revisit prior learning and introduce new spelling patterns and rules.

    • Explicit teaching of strategies (segmenting, syllables, morphology/etymology, and mnemonics).

    • Regular review and over-learning to secure retention and automaticity.

  • Homework: Children receive weekly spelling homework focused on year-group spelling patterns and words.
Homework will be uploaded to Google Classroom or a printed copy will be sent home.

  • Assessment & support: Ongoing checks inform swift intervention; resources are adapted to meet different needs.

Impact

By implementing RWI Spelling, we expect to see:

  • Improved accuracy and fluency in children’s independent writing across the curriculum.

  • Stronger vocabulary knowledge through teaching of word structure (prefixes, suffixes, roots) and meaning.

  • Greater confidence and independence when tackling unfamiliar words.

  • Consistent progress year-on-year, evidenced through class work, assessments, and pupil voice.

How you can help at home:

Please support your child to learn the weekly spelling words and rules (e.g., quick daily practice, “look–cover–write–check,” and using new words in sentences). If you have any questions or need support, contact the school office or your class teacher—we’re happy to help.
