At Bonner Primary School we want to ensure that all children develop a love of maths and confidence in applying their learning to real life contexts.
In the Early Years, Maths is taught through exploring and practical activities. Children learn to count, recognise numbers and explore shape, space and measure. Children are exposed to mathematical language on a daily basis.
Our Maths scheme for Y1 to Y6 is creative, hands-on and covers all the objectives from the 2014 Maths curriculum. We use the Abacus scheme as a basis for planning but this is adapted to suit the needs of our children. Key topics are revisited at several points in the year with increased difficulty. Children are taught in groups.
In KS1, we use practical, concrete and mental methods of calculation. We use a wide range of resources to help children to develop their mathematical understanding.
In KS2, we teach formal methods of calculation. Our overall emphasis is on the ability to reason, understand and solve mathematical problems.
We also run a large number of pre-learning, catch-up and extension groups to ensure that all children achieve their mathematical potential.
The curriculum provides practical approaches and direct experiences. Children are encouraged and taught to talk about and share ideas in order to develop their mathematical language and thinking. They are encouraged to explain to their peers the methods they choose and share different techniques to learn from each other. The children enjoy engaging and challenging Maths lessons using a wide range of resources to suit all learning needs.
Bonner pupils have access to the online maths programmes: Times Tables Rock Stars, Active Learn (Abacus) and Espresso. Children can develop their quick mental recall of facts and embed their maths learning at home.
